DHAKA: Election Commission has sent a letter to the Speaker asking to make sure that local MPs are complying with the code of conduct in the upcoming district council election.

Election commissioner Mohammad Shahnewaz made the disclosure to journalists at Election Commission office in city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area on Tuesday (December 27) afternoon.

He said EC sent the letter to Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury seeking her intervention so that electoral code of conduct is not violated. The EC earlier issued an order asking MPs to leave their constituencies for the sake of a free and fair election.

“We have received allegations that some of the MPs are still in the area defying the EC rule and trying to influence the election process. It is unacceptable that as law makers they are breaching laws.”

On the issue of election preparations, he said that all preparations have been completed. Equipments were sent to members concerned and election will be fair hopefully.

On the security issue, the commissioner said that law enforcing members have been deployed in the poll centers.
