DHAKA: The meeting of the Standing Committee of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) ended Sunday night (January 29) without any decision over sending names to Election Commission (EC) Search Committee.
The meeting began at party chairperson’s Gulshan political office around 9:30 pm and ended around 11:00 pm.
With Khaleda Zia in the chair, secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and Standing Committee members Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Barrister Moudud Hossain, Tariqul Islam, Lt. Gen. (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia, Dr Moin Khan, Najrul Islam Khan, Mirza Abbas and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy were present here.
Earlier, Khaleda Zia convened the meeting after the EC Search Committee had sought five names from each of the political parties that held meetings with the President Abdul Hamid.
The Standing Committee members proposed several names including a former chief justice, cabinet secretary and senior secretaries. They, however, could not reach a consensus in picking up five persons.
Wishing anonymity one of the BNP leaders, who took part in the meeting, told Banglanews that they have requested the party chairperson to make the final decision.
She would take the decision on Monday (January 30) and inform the secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, he added.
