DHAKA: The High Court has stayed for six months the government order suspending mayor of Gazipur City Corporation Prof MA Mannan from his position.
The HC bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan passed the order on Thursday (April 13) following a writ petition filed the BNP-backed mayor.
The court also issued a rule asking the government to explain why the suspension order would not be declared illegal.
Secretary of the local government ministry and other concerned officials have been asked to respond to the rule within four weeks.
Supreme Court’s senior lawyer Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain moved for MA Mannan, while deputy attorney general stood for the state in the court.
Earlier on August 19 in 2015, the local government ministry suspended the Gazipur Mayor for the first time. The High Court stayed the suspension order on April 11 in 2016.
The mayor was suspended again on April 18 in 2016. He was expected to take the charge of mayor again on April 17, but detained on April 15.
MA Mannan was freed on bail on January 6 in 2017.
