DHAKA: The Parliament has expressed deep shock at the death of many people, including Army personnel, at the landslides in the hilly districts-- Chittagong, Rangamati and Bandarban.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury placed the shock proposal in the Parliament in the beginning of day proceeding on Wednesday (June 14).
Placing the shock proposal, the Speaker said that the last two days torrential rains triggered a series of landslides in the hilly districts.
“The Jatiya Sangsad is shocked over the death of the people. I pray for salvation of the departed souls and convey deep sympathy to the families of the victims. I also pray for early recovery of the injured,” she said.
The Speaker uttered the names of the four Army personnel who died in the landslides. They are Major Mohammad Mahfuzul Haque, Captain Md Tanvir Salam, Corporal Mohammad Azizul Haque and Solider Mohammad Shahin Alam.
"They were posted at Manikchhari camp in Bandraban and were working there to rescue the victims but a fresh landslide virtually buried them under tones of mud," she told the House.
About 150 people, including members of the Bangladesh Army, have so far been died and a number of people injured in landslide in the three hilly districts due to heavy downpour caused by depression in the Bay.
