SC rejects Khaleda’s re-investigation plea in graft case

DHAKA: The Appellate Division on Sunday (July 2) upheld a High Court order that rejected a petition filed by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia seeking for re-investigation into a part of Zia Orphanage Trust graft case against her filed by the ACC.

A four-member SC bench headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order in response to petition filed by Khaleda challenging the HC order.

Earlier on March 9, The High Court rejected the plea.

Senior lawyer AZ Mohammad Ali, Zainul Abedin, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Barrister Zakir Hossain Bhuiyan moved on behalf of Khaleda Zia in the court while Khurshid Alam Khan moved for Anti-Corruption Commission.

Earlier on February 2, a trial court rejected Khaleda’s petition seeking for a fresh probe into a portion of Zia Orphanage corruption case against her.

Later on March 1, Khaleda filed the petition with the High Court which was then rejected on March 9.

Khaleda’s lawyers said, “It was alleged in the case that fund was received by Zia Orphanage Trust from a bank of Saudi Arabia. But originally fund came from Kuwait, not Saudi Arabia. The petition was filed for the re-investigation of this portion only.”

On July 3 in 2008, the ACC filed the case accusing six people including Khaleda Zia for misappropriating over Tk 2.10 crore that was received as grants for orphans via a foreign bank.

The trial of this case is going on in the special judge court-5 of Akhtaruzzaman in city’s Bakshibazar.
