BNP leader Minar gets bail in murder case

DHAKA: The High Court has granted six months bail to BNP leader Mahatab Uddin Ahmmed alias Minar Chowdhury in a case filed over the murder of former Upazila Parishad (UP) chairman Ekramul Haq in Fulgazi upazila of Feni.

An HC bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil granted the bail upon submitting Minar’s passport before trial court on Sunday (Oct 22).

Advocate Mansurul Huq Chowdhury moved for the bail petition while Assistant Attorney General Bashir Ahmed moved for the state in court.

AAG Bashir Ahmed told reporters that the appellate division ordered to settle the case within six months in June this year. If it is not settled within due time, then ordered to consider Minar’s bail. The HC granted the bail considering the matter.

Earlier on Nov 24, the HC granted six months bail but the apex court cancelled his bail on March 19 in response to a plea filed by the state against the HC order. Moreover, the SC ordered to settle the case within six months.

On May 20 in 2014, UP chairman Ekram was shot, hacked and torched to death by miscreants in broad daylight in Feni town. Later victim’s brother Rezaul Huq filed a case with Feni model police station accusing BNP leader Minar Chowdhury as prime suspect and 35 unidentified others.
