DHAKA: The Appellate Division on Sunday (Nov 26) upheld stay on the High Court order that granted bail to BNP leader Mahatab Uddin Ahmmed alias Minar Chowdhury in a murder case.
An appeal bench led by Chief Justice Md. Abdul Wahhab Miah also ordered the lower court to settle the case within four months.
Lawyer Sharif Uddin Chakladar moved for Minar Chowdhury in court.
Earlier Oct 22, an HC bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil granted bail upon submitting Minar’s passport before trial court.
On Oct 25, chamber judge Sayed Mahbub Hossain of the Supreme Court stayed the HC bail order following a government plea against it.
A case was filed against Minar Chowdhury on charge murdering former Upazila Parishad (UP) chairman Ekramul Haq Ekram in Fulgazi upazila of Feni.
On May 20 in 2014, UP chairman Ekram was shot, hacked and torched to death by miscreants in broad daylight in Feni town. Later victim’s brother Rezaul Huq filed a case with Feni model police station accusing BNP leader Minar Chowdhury as prime suspect and 35 unidentified others.
