BNP vice-chairman Tuku sent to jail

SIRAJGANJ: A district court on Monday (April 10) has sent BNP central committee vice-chairman and former state minister for power Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku to jail in a case filed for torching a train in Sirajganj.

Sirajganj District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Zafrul Hasan passed the order denying the bail appeal upon Tuku’s surrender.

Earlier around 11:30 am on Monday, Tuku surrendered in court in three cases filed against him.

District and Sessions Judge Court’s additional public prosecutor (PP) Abdur Rahman told that on October 11 in 2010, six BNP men crushed under the wheels of a speedy train in Soydabad area in sadar upazila of Sirajganj while BNP chief Khaleda Zia was attending a rally there as chief guest. In rage, the BNP men from that rally conducted vandalism and arson attack in the train.

Seven separate cases were filed in the incident accusing BNP vice-chairman Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku and thousand other leaders and activists, he added.
