BNP to join polls to avoid disaster: Quader

NARAYANGANJ: Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said BNP’s political position will be worse than Muslim League if it boycotts the next parliamentary election.

The minister made the remarks on Thursday (June 22) while inspecting activities of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) in Narayanganj over ensuring security for Eid home-goers in different routes of the country.

Mentioning BNP’s demand on election-time supportive government, Quader said, “There is no such provision as supportive government acknowledged in the constitution. No other country in the world has such provision. Then why Khaleda Zia is hoping for a supportive government?”

Quader said election will be held according to the constitution and BNP will participate in it. BNP leaders are facing pressure to join election from party’s root level men.

“If BNP do not actively participate in the next election, then their position as a political party among countrymen will be worse than Muslim League. The idea of boycotting this election will drag BNP into a quicksand. I don’t think that is the kind of risk BNP leaders will take.”
