DHAKA: Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader said that his party has not nominated any mayoral candidate in the upcoming Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) by-polls till now.
He said this at a press conference following a meeting with the secretaries of the party at Awami League president’s Dhanmondi political office in the city on Thursday (January 11).
Obaidul Quader, also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister, said that Awami League has not given nomination to anyone till now. The party nomination board will take final decision in this regard. Awami League president Sheikh Hasina did not give any green signal to Atiqul Islam as the party candidate, he cleared.
However, Atiqul Islam, a former president of the BGMEA, has reputedly claimed that he got the green signal from the top-level of the ruling party to become a candidate for the DNCC by-polls.
Obaidul Quader said, “The Prime Minister told Atiqul that you should go to the common people if you want to contest in the polls. The party nomination board will give final decision in this regard.”
Criticizing the BNP, the AL leader said that there is no democracy in the BNP. It has been two years of their council. No meeting of working committee held since the council. Is it a political party? Where there is no internal politics in the party, how could this party say that there is no politics in the country? he asked.
