12 buy AL’s nomination forms till Sunday

DHAKA: A total of 12 aspirants have collected the nomination forms of the ruling Awami League in two days for mayoral by-polls in the upcoming Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).

Among them, four aspirants brought the nomination forms from the Awami League president’s Dhanmondi office in the capital city on Sunday (January 14).

Earlier on Saturday (January 13), the eight other aspirants collected the nomination forms seeking the party’s ticket to contest the DNCC polls.

The four aspirants who collected forms on Sunday are- Awami League’s former central working committee member Advocate Mamtaj Uddin Mehedi, businessman Abed Mansur, former ward councilor Shamim Hasan and former army official Maj (retd) Yad Ali Fakir.

On the other hand, the eight aspirants who collected the forms on Saturday are- former AL MP Dr HBM Iqbal, former FBCCI president Atiqul Islam, FBCCI director Helal Uddin, Dhaka University teacher Zubair Alam, poet Rasel Ashiki, businessman Adam Tamiji Haq, principal of Monipur High School & College Farhad Hossain and teacher Shah Alam.  

Awami League on Saturday (January 13) started selling nomination papers for the mayoral by-polls in a bid to select the party-backed candidate for the upcoming mayoral polls.

The form distribution will continue until Monday (January 15) in the Dhanmondi office.  Interested aspirants can buy the nomination form in exchange of Tk 25,000.

The ruling party will pick a candidate after interviewing the nomination aspirants at a meeting of AL’s nomination board to be held on January 16.

The DNCC polls are scheduled to be held on February 26. The mayor post fell vacant following the death of Annisul Huq who died at a London hospital on November 30.
