Presidential polls in due time: Law minister Law minister Anisul Huq

DHAKA: Law Minister Anisul Huq said the presidential election must be held before February 23 as per constitution and election commission will take steps for it.

He made the remark to reporters after inaugurating a workshop of associate judges in city’s Judicial Administration Training Institute on Wednesday (January 24).

Earlier the minister said presidential election will be held on February 19.

“According to article 123 of the constitution, presidential election should be held between 90 and 60 days before the five-year term of the president expires. The election commission will fix the election date and announce schedule according to constitution. But the polls must be held before Feb 23. Hopefully EC will make decision quickly.”

In response to a query about whether AL nominated any final candidate for the presidential polls, Anisul said, “Party police makers will sit-in and make a decision in this matter. There is a method to do that and AL’s nomination board will announce presidential candidate as per procedures.”
